Blogging Home Decorating and Design: This Emperor Has New Clothes

Anyone who’s ever read through home design and decorating blogs has likely noticed an interesting theme come to light after a while; while a few blogs seem mostly dedicated to intelligent and thought provoking articles about innovative and well thought-out designs and decorating, many others seem to be either just a regurgitation of other peoples’ ideas, fanboy fawning, or just a blatant mockery.

This isn’t to say that all decorating and design ideas are across the board all fabulous or all tragic mistakes, but rarely do you see thoughtful critiques or criticisms of these new ideas or trends.

I suppose for the sake of ease, it’s less effort to parrot what other people have already thought out. Unfortunately, reading blog posts that say basically “look what I found on Blah-Blog!” tends to get a little tired. The regurgitation-type of blog post tends to be seen days after you’ve read the original post where it was first published anyways, making it even less exciting. Unfortunately, many of these repeated posts don’t even have the added value of another perspective.

Fanboy/girl posts can come across just like a regurgitated post or actually pull their material from other sources. However, the basic gist of these posts is that whatever design or decorating scheme they’re about is just FABULOUS! No questions asked, no criticisms shared, no critical thinking involved. Sometimes these types of blog posts are about some pretty cutting edge kinds of designs and sometimes they’re very “vintage”, but everything they post about is FABULOUS! For the record, “vintage” seems to be overused as a euphemism for “old, over-priced junk” from what I can gather from a lot of decorating and design blogs.

The third type of blog post that shows up all too often is the catty comment blog. The main purpose of this type of blog is to poke fun at other people’s work. While there is no shortage of designs being created by art or design students that make you wonder just what’s in the water in whatever city they’re studying in, there are also some designs that are very interesting. Unfortunately, snippy one-liners aren’t very funny for very long, instead giving a distinctly junior-high kind of feel to the writing.

All is not lost in the world of design and decorating blogs however! As a general bit of advice, look for blogs with authors who actually express their own opinions about ideas, trends, and products. With a little patience and a lot of link-clicking, there are some pretty fabulous blogs out there if you just look around.

Taking Landscape Design

Landscape design is actually an essential course to proper home design. Many people think that landscaping is something that can be done by just anybody but there are certain parameters that contribute to a beautifully landscaped garden or yard which can be taught in landscape design courses. Being a landscape architect means that you have studied landscaping through this course.

Essentials In Landscape Design

This course brings to focus the essentials that a landscape engineer or architect needs to know. The essentials of landscape design include the symmetry of the landscape design. Even informal landscaping designs need to have some semblance of order that makes the landscape project look like it was cultivated naturally. This natural look is achieved by looking into native plants that complement each other and which plants thrive in the natural environment.

The natural symmetry that exists in natural land formations as well as water formations is another aspect that is pursued in landscape design courses. Formal landscaping follows symmetry more rigidly than informal landscaping. Grass lawns are well kept and the plants are trimmed and pruned to perfection. The symmetry that many architects of landscaping strive for is more pronounced in formal landscaping.

Landscape design also teaches the formal geometric designs that are often used for formal landscaping. Another thing that needs to be learned in the landscape design courses is the balance of things in the project. Which spot the sun hits most and which spot is often neglected by sunlight is another thing that needs to be considered in landscaping.

These are important factors that should be kept in mind especially when thinking of putting a pond in which fish and other creatures are to be integrated. Landscape design also focuses on other factors that add to a beautiful design. The kinds of plants that should be used are often things that a landscape architect should consider. Fast growing and slow growing plants both have their following.

Those with pocket gardens are usually recommended to have slow growing plants to prevent constant trimming and pruning. Fast growing plants that need to be perennially maintained are often relegated to landscape designs that have gardener to maintain them. Studying landscape design will usually bring about an understanding for beauty in the botanical and natural sense. Landscaping is an art form that many can do especially if they have an eye for symmetry and beauty. Learning landscape design courses can benefit homeowners who strive to do their own designs.

Backyard Design

Since backyard design takes place behind the house, it may not be obvious as you drive down the street, but there are changes taking place in backyards everywhere.  We are spending more time relaxing on our decks and patios after long work weeks.  We’re leaving the comfort of our air conditioned interiors to entertain and cook outdoors.

This shift is changing the way we approach backyard design.  Increasingly, backyards are being compartmentalized, encompassing a wide range of inviting spaces designed for recreation and relaxation.

Technology plays a key role in helping us spend more time with our families, and to make the most of the spaces we have – both inside and outside the house.  Advances in outdoor lighting make exterior areas more inviting after dark.

Heaters and outdoor fireplaces provide greater comfort and extend the outdoor season.  Backyard design can now transform your barbeque into an outdoor kitchen, able to provide gourmet meals.  Innovations have made pools and hot tubs more affordable.

The development of durable, weather-resistant materials for furniture and fabrics continues to enhance the style and comfort of outdoor furnishings.  However, successful backyard design involves more than adding accessories.

Backyard landscaping ideas are best approached as part of the overall home designing process – one that considers the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.  When porches, decks, and patios are planned as integral parts of a new or renovated home, they can be designed to create transitions that are so subtle they blur the line between the house and the landscape.

When planning outdoor spaces, take backyard design hints from your home’s indoor rooms.  By designing exterior areas with the same attention given to an indoor room, you can create a place to gather with your family, or escape after a long day at work.

These outdoor rooms can have floors, walls, ceilings, comfortable furnishings, and decorative accents, just like your living room.  Keep in mind the outdoor elements which will dictate fabric choices, life cycle of your furnishings, and how your backyard design will work with local wildlife.

Throughout your backyard, spaces should vary in shape, size, and character.  Relaxing spaces, for instance, should include comfortable seating, while dining areas need sturdy tables and outdoor cooking amenities.  Both should be positioned for afternoon shade.

While some areas are for sitting, others should be for standing or strolling, and at least one area should be for activities – especially if you have children.  How you divide the overall plot into these spaces will be determined by its general size and shape, how you usually spend your outdoor time, and the composition of your family.

A combination of several cozy areas has a way of feeling larger than a single medium-sized space.  If there’s no room to divide, lay out paths, patios, or lawns diagonally or along an S-curve.  This makes a yard appear bigger by allowing it to unfold gradually rather than in a single glance.

Paying attention to details, such as paving materials or planting zones, also makes a small space seem larger.  This is because it takes longer to visually absorb all of the elements.

With larger spaces, you can divide them into smaller, functional spaces, so they appear more inviting and manageable.  When you’re planning your backyard design, identify areas for cooking, dining, entertaining, gardening, and activities.  Determine how much space is needed for each.

Also define areas that you wish to leave natural.  I have a natural area at the rear of my plot and it really comes in handy for depositing grass clippings weeds, and other natural debris, while providing a natural barrier between homes.

Regardless of size, backyard spaces should be clearly defined and conveniently connected.  This may be as simple as changing the paving materials – like stepping from a stone patio onto a lawn.  Building a low step between two such areas will distinguish the spaces while preserving the open feeling.

It takes time to implement the plans for a backyard design.  Take it slow and tackle one area at a time.  Don’t be surprised if it takes longer than you expected.

You will probably change plants and make improvements over several years.  Start with areas closest to the house because you can see them from the indoors and because they will be used most.  And finally, address any urgent outdoor needs up front – such as storage needs or play areas for children.

With a good backyard design, you will enhance your outdoor experiences for many years to come.  ENJOY!

Add Wallpaper to your Interior Design Project

Open any interior design magazine these days and you are sure to spot wallpaper as the latest trend in home design. Decorating today is all about the layering of texture with wallpaper and is replacing the painted feature wall, and it’s not expected to go away anytime soon.

Some of this is partly due to the recent revival of Florence Broadhurst designs, the eccentric and talented Australian designer famous for her handprinted wallpapers. Her designs can currently be found in the Glamour, Flora, Blueprints, and Concepts Collections, and are matched by no other designer. Her furnishings and wallpapers are also in high demand worldwide at the moment due to their unique and luxurious patterns.

Broadhurst combined fuscia pinks, lemon yellows, lime greens, vivid oranges, turquoise, blacks, metallic silvers and gold – all perfectly matching her own flamboyant personality. She was also well known for printing onto transparent mylars, foils and metallic papers. She called her revolutionary handprinted creations ;Vigorous designs for modern living’.

Adding wallpaper to your home is a great way to create atmosphere in a room, often all it takes is one wall of an interesting and vivid design and it will prove to be a talking point for anyone visiting your home.

Wallpaper also has the added advantage that if your walls are far from perfect then a thicker textured paper can be a cheaper option of covering up the bumps and cracks that normal paint just can’t hide.

There are some particularly interesting wallpaper patterns and textures at the moment. Retro prints have made a comeback but in a classier and subtler style than the first time around, whilst for the more adventuress amongst you then how about fake fur? Oriental prints, metallic geometrics, flocked wallpapers are available, and for the natural look there are papers that mimic the look of natural grasses and botanical prints. Some totally new ideas feature metal sheeting and wood veneer.

You can add wallpaper to a room to lift an outdated look or give it a splash of colour. Decide for yourself whether to use it as a feature, or on all the walls to create a theme within your home. It can even be hung as you would a piece of art. It is all down to your own personal taste and likes.

Metallics have made a return for winter 2009, try teaming them with cream, black and silver for wall finishes such as wallpaper, as well as upholstery and bed linens. Greens and browns are firmly established but watery hues will be the colours to watch for, having made their mark on the fashion scene. For a chic take, try down grey with powder blue and crisp glossy white.

If you have scoured the shops and searched online but can’t find anything you really like then it’s always possible to get wallpaper custom made to your own design. Just look online for wallpaper companies that will work with you on your design idea and transform it into wallpaper; you can be creative and combine latest trends and upcoming design with your own personal ideas.

You can always buy plain wallpaper that simply needs painting. This is easy to fit with your present décor and furnishings and can be painted over again and again as often as you like. Paintable wallpaper comes in a range of patterns and textured finishes.

Some people like to hang wallpaper for themselves. However if you are not very skilled in the do-it-yourself department and don’t have a lot of patience then it can be a lot easier to hire a professional to do the job for you. Wallpaper has to be hung correctly and lined up correctly otherwise it will look a total mess and will have to be stripped and started all over again. Professionals will hang the wallpaper using a liner underneath which prevents the paper from curling at the edges. When hung correctly, your wallpaper should keep its good condition for at least ten to fifteen years.

Interior Design With Wood And Rattan Furniture

For some homeowners, interior design doesn’t come easy. They find it difficult to come up with ideas. Even with good ideas, they are not sure whether those ideas can be executed. So they hire interior designers to do the job for them.

But interior design doesn’t have to be a difficult task. In fact, many homeowners will be surprised when they realized that they have more creativity than they know. Here are 5 quick tips that will make the design process simpler and quicker.

Tip 1: Be bold with ideas.

Tip 2: Get more ideas from home design reading materials.

Tip 3: Work with colors and light.

Tip 4: Consult the professionals.

Tip 5: Use wood or rattan furniture to reduce cost.

Tip 1: Be bold with ideas.

When coming up with ideas, be as bold as possible. Don’t limit your own creativity. Just jot down all the ideas that come to mind. Ideas come to you in funny ways – e.g. while you are traveling, in the bathroom, etc. So be sure to have a blank notepad by your side all the time. You may even get your inspiration in the middle of the night!

Tip 2: Get more ideas from home design reading materials.

If you need more ideas, simply go to your local bookstore or library and browse the latest home design magazines. You will get lots of good ideas from the pictures. Don’t try to copy the design themes wholesale. You are browsing just to get some stimulation to help you get started. Keep the ideas you like, and then dump the rest. You will have more original ideas coming up as you go along.

Tip 3: Work with colors and light.

Much of the effects are usually created by playing around with colors and light. For instance, you can install some orange lights behind a painting. When you switch on the lights, the glow creates a rather unique atmosphere. You can also choose furniture pieces with shiny surfaces so that the light can bounce off the surfaces.

Tip 4: Consult the professionals.

Once you have a few good concepts, it’s now time to consult the design pros. It’s always good to keep the pros in the loop because they can provide valuable advice. Some ideas may be good, but they are not practical. Draw on the experiences of the professionals to ensure that the execution process is a smooth sailing one.

Tip 5: Use wood or rattan furniture to reduce cost.

When you start out with ideas, you don’t have to worry about cost. But after consulting the designers, you may find that you are out of budget. In that case, you can always cut back on cost by choosing furniture pieces that are durable and reasonably priced. Furniture made from wood and rattan are good choices.

Wood furniture stands out because there are a wide variety of wood to choose from. You can be sure that there is something that fits your overall theme. Wood furniture can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Rattan furniture is gaining popularity quickly because rattan is a very versatile material. That means it can be used to create all sorts of designs. Synthetic rattan is currently used to build the most fanciful looking home furniture. They are modern looking and come in bright colors.

The lush greens and yellows of natural flora are only two of commonest colours you will find in a tropical <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=” http://www.rdni.co.uk/”>living room design suggestion</a>. Select colors that are found naturally like the colour of trees, plants, flowers and fruits. Think about a tropical forest or a market full of tropical fruits to induce your design.

How to design Eco-Friendly Homes in Chicago

Chicago, as an environmentally-conscious city, has many eco-friendly, “green” homes on offer. Apart from the obvious fact that a green home is good for the environment, homebuyers are also cognizant of the potential savings that green homes will get them in the long run, though the initial costs may be slightly high.

A well designed green home can cut down on energy consumption by 30-60%. Owners of green homes also enjoy many state and federal tax breaks under the Energy Policy Act, 2005. The city itself promotes a green future by offering information on services such as Recycling, usage of CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs and energy efficiency through the Chicago Green Home Program.

Guidelines for Green Homes

When you buy a new home, you would be well advised to look for an eco-friendly and energy efficient one because it will save you a lot of money in maintenance and energy costs in the years to come. The hardware costs will typically be recovered within the first five years. When looking for a green home, it is important that you are aware of the various terminologies used and the features of a green building.

A green home may be one that is constructed with energy efficiency as its goal or it may have been built using environment-friendly construction material. There are six guidelines that the National Association of Homebuilders uses for green homes:

1. Design and Preparation of the Lot

Construction causes heavy impact on the soil, wild life and vegetation of the environment surrounding the building site. Evaluating the effects of construction on the environment will enable the builders to figure out how and where the impact can be minimized or eliminated entirely. Building on lots that have already been used for some sort of development previously is an ideal way to minimize construction damage to the environment.

2. Utilize Energy Efficiently

Green home construction integrates techniques that utilize the energy that is available more efficiently. This is also combined with reducing the immediate energy requirements.

3. Use Resources Efficiently

Technological advancements and superior building methods allow for efficient use of building materials and thereby lessen the strain on environment and minimize construction waste production. New homes. construction in chicago is all about reusing or recycling almost all materials such as lumber or concrete. Using bamboo for flooring, instead of the traditional wood, ensures that the material used for construction is easily replenished because bamboo grows much faster than regular woods.

4. Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air is significantly more polluted than the external air, so interior ventilation and moisture management is an important aspect in any green home design.

5. Conservation of Water

A green design will ensure that a plan is in place for effectively managing and using the water that is available. This single aspect can have ramifications on more aspects of energy efficient home design than any other: faucets, gutter downspouts, exterior cisterns and all other interior and exterior plumbing hardware will be affected by the conservation design.

6. Awareness, Maintenance and Operation

The homebuilder invests a considerable amount of time and energy on a green home project. It is up to the homeowner to maintain it, and make the best out of the design by learning everything about the energy saving features and its operation and maintenance.

7 house interior design tips from the expert

Some innovative and easy house interior design tips can help you create more space and make your small living area look gorgeous. Don’t be disheartened if you have a small living space. They too have great potential in home decorating ideas.

Let’s start with the windows of your small room. This is one thing that should hold prime importance in home interior design. They allow light and air to your small space so use minimum accessories to make the window look big. Heavy accessories will only block light and make your room look even more dingy. You get some very sophisticated options of window accessories in the market. You can also custom make it to match your home décor by using matching shades and fabric. Next comes the floor space. De-clutter your floor from unnecessary bulky items. Keep smaller items on shelves or window panes if possible. You will be surprised to see how much space you can create by just shifting few things off the floor. This is one of the greatest house interior design tips for cramped up spaces. Color plays a very important role in home interior design. Though use of more than two or three color can give new dimensions to your room, but this particular home design tip is unfit for small spaces. Use a single color to paint all the walls of the room. Use similar shades for other rooms in the house. House interior design tips rely heavily on fabrics. So when it comes to small spaces, avoid using flashy fabrics with large prints. If you do have some furniture with larger prints, tone it down with plain fabrics. Every house has a corner for emotional sentiments. Use fabrics to create depth in such areas. This will give a great visual impact. Small spaces usually face the problem of limited lighting. Do not go for artificial lighting. This is not a very helpful home interior design tip. Instead see to pull maximum natural lighting into the room but positioning mirrors directly opposite the window or by using glossy wall paints that will reflect natural light. Try and keep furniture and appliances dust-free to give a better lighting effect. Plants accessorize any living space in a natural way. House interior design tips for small spaces suggest small indoor plants around the room. You can also have fresh flower bouquets on the room center or corner. But they need to be regularly changed to give the room a fresh look. Flooring plays an integral part in home interior design. But unfortunately many apartment spaces do not allow change in flooring. But you can always cover it up with better options. A lighter area rug or a light bare wood floor carpet always makes the room look bigger.

Hoping these tips help you make a move with interior designing. And should you have any questions on the way, an expert is just a call away!
